Drawing with Wire: Capturing Contours
In this workshop, we will take inspiration from Alexander Calder’s wire portraits. Join us as we practice contour line drawing techniques and translate one composition into a wire sculpture!

Community /Artist Collaboration Workshop
Students will participate in the creation of a multiple-part sculpture, beginning by choosing a shape representing a drop of water. This mixed media project incorporates drawing, writing, and collage, and through collaboration, a community multiple-part sculpture will be created by the artist directing the workshop.
Investigating Film

Refractography
Create fascinating, colorful abstract works using long exposure and light painting techniques. When light passes through some objects, it refracts into unlimited beautiful patterns. The word photography means “written in light,” and that is precisely what we will do—capture truly one-of-a-kind images using the power of light and random design. Leave this class having created truly awesome images and excited knowing you can recreate this magic at home.
Iconotexts: A Visual Art & Creative Writing Workshop
Surveying a range of word-image collaborations (from ekphrastic poetry to graphic novels, from essay films to multimedia diaries), this workshop will explore how poets and writers interface with visual art(ists) to create and enlarge their own writing. We will analyze work from established and emerging artists/authors, clarify or reframe our opinions of artworks in and through language, and use visually oriented prompts to draft poems, stories, and (creative) essays of our own. All levels are welcome. No prior experience is necessary.
Art History: Surrealism
Dive deep into the realm of Surrealism with this workshop. Discover the movement's philosophies and iconic artists, then put your creativity to the test in a sculpture competition. Using objects in unexpected ways, you'll craft sculptures that challenge reality.
Fabricscapes: City, Land, Sea, and Beyond
Use a variety of fabrics, including lace, buttons, and threads, to create unique fabricscapes of some of your real or imagined places.
Bookmaking
Create a one-of-a-kind book using a variety of papers and materials to create a personal writing or sketchbook.
Digital Narrative Coasters
Sharpen your digital drawing and painting skills by creating narrative artwork. Your canvas will be a set of four coasters that, when placed together, display your artwork. The work will be printed using sublimation ink and then transferred to a set of four cloth-covered coasters using the dye sublimation printing process.
Introduction to Egg Tempera
Participants in Introduction to Egg Tempera will make their own paint using a historical process. We will use natural pigments and experiment with paint application.
Collage with Aqueous Media
In this workshop, guests will use found collage, watercolors, and acrylic mediums to create surreal collaged imagery on watercolor paper. We will discuss contemporary collage artists, how different media mix creates visual opportunities, and how found imagery can be recontextualized.
Going to Great Depths in a Shallow Space: Bas-Relief
In this hands-on workshop, you will be guided through the steps for making a mold of a Bas-Relief tile. You will begin by designing, molding, and carving a small clay tile based on personal imagery. Bring your sketchbooks for inspiration! After your tile is complete, you will make a plaster mold of it. Finally, you will make several tiles from your mold. This mold can be used beyond this class, and you will leave with a knowledge of making mass production work!
Curious About Cyanotypes?
Discover the magic of one of the oldest photographic processes! In this hands-on workshop, students will explore the art and science behind cyanotypes, a method of creating striking blue-toned images using sunlight and chemistry. Experiment with materials, design your own prints, and take home your unique creations. No prior experience is needed—bring your curiosity and creativity!
Storytelling Through Color: A Portrait Workshop Inspired by Bisa Butler
Create your own unique mixed-media portraits using various materials inspired by the quilted works of Bisa Butler! Delve into Butler's artistic process and explore the power of storytelling through visual art as you develop your artistic skills, learn about color theory, and gain a deeper appreciation for the power of art to tell stories and celebrate diverse experiences.
Drawing with Wire: Capturing Contours
Clay Caricatures: Fun with Features!
This workshop is a fun introduction to sculpting faces in clay. It briefly introduces caricatures, which are funny, big-headed drawings street artists often make. You will create a bust roughly three inches in height based on your chosen celebrity. This experience is an opportunity to learn tips and techniques for sculpting the human face minus the pressure of perfection.
Life Size Stop-Motion Animation
In this workshop, students will learn the basics of animating large objects, such as themselves, to create imaginative worlds where reality is tested. We will experiment with a variety of techniques and focus on several principles of animation that produce engaging movement. Prior to the workshop, students should download a free stop animation app to their phone for use in class.
Abstraction Techniques
This workshop will introduce students to basic abstraction techniques used by artists like Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp
